⚡️ Subscription management, simplified

Creating a subscription and changing a plan now use the same two-panel layout as subscription edits. Configuration lives on the left, and a live preview on the right shows the subscription timeline and the invoicing impact of the current selections, before anything is saved.

Key changes:

  • Two steps, down from four or five: pricing configuration, then remaining settings
  • One pricing configuration section for prices, allocations, and adjustments. No more jumping between steps to reference previous configuration choices
  • Prices are edited in a dialog, like allocations and adjustments. Each price card is a compact read-only summary, so overrides stay visible while you work instead of being buried in a tall form
  • Live preview of timeline and invoice changes as configuration is adjusted

Try it now, or learn more in our docs.

Mix billing modes on fixed fees within a plan

Fixed-fee prices on a plan can now each be configured as billed in advance or in arrears, independent of the other fixed fees. This lets you combine, for example, an upfront platform fee billed in advance with an in arrears flat fee that draws from a prepaid credit balance — on the same plan.

In the dashboard, you'll find a per-price Billing mode picker on each fixed-fee card. Plans created via the API can now include fixed-fee prices with differing billed_in_advance values.

Regenerate invoice and receipt PDFs in the dashboard

If your business or tax information has changed (e.g. shipping address or customer information), you are now able to regenerate your invoice to reflect the new business information. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure compliance with regulations in the relevant jurisdiction, including any tax laws that do not allow billing documents to be modified.

Reset and disable customer portal links

In the Orb dashboard, you can now reset and disable the customer portal link on a per-customer basis. This allows you to selectively disable or re-issue links for more granular access management.

Note that both options immediately revoke access to existing customer portals for that customer.

Customer-level automatic tax settings

You can now control automatic tax calculations at the customer level, giving you granular control over which customers have taxes automatically calculated on their invoices.

Customer-Level Tax Calculate Overrides

Previously, automatic tax calculation was configured at the account level and applied to all customers. With this update, you can now override the account-level setting for individual customers, providing more flexibility for complex billing scenarios.

The new automatic_tax_enabled setting on customers works as follows:

  • true: Always calculate taxes automatically for this customer (regardless of account setting)
  • false: Never calculate taxes automatically for this customer (regardless of account setting)
  • null: Inherit the account-level automatic tax setting (default behavior)

Configuration Options

You can configure customer-level automatic tax settings through:

  • Customer API: Use the automatic_tax_enabled field when creating or updating customers
  • Orb Dashboard: Navigate to the customer's billing details section to modify their tax settings
  • Bulk Operations: Update multiple customers programmatically via the API

When a customer has a specific tax setting configured, you'll see an "Override" label in the dashboard. When inheriting from the account setting, it will show "Account setting".

Use Cases

Gradual tax rollout: Enable automatic tax calculation for select customers during testing phases before rolling out to your entire customer base.

External tax use cases: When tax is handled in a separate system, this setting can ensure tax is skipped in Orb and not double taxing your customer.

The customer-level setting takes precedence over the account-level setting, ensuring you have complete control over tax calculation behavior for each customer relationship.

Custom expirations for allocations

When adding a pre-purchase allocation to a plan or subscriptions, Orb now supports a custom expiration option for each allocation credit block. This option allows you to set a specific number of days or months after which the block should expire. This option can be configured in both our UI and API.

To learn more about allocations, please visit our docs.

Customer hierarchy

Orb now has support for creating hierarchical relationships between your customers to power flexible pricing, usage aggregation, and invoicing.

This capability is particularly valuable when your customers desire to aggregate usage across multiple customers on a single parent invoice while maintaining the ability to configure pricing per customer or groups of customers.

Remove a Credit Block by Voiding the Original Balance

We’re excited to share that Orb now allows users to remove credit blocks from the credit ledger. This can be done by voiding the original credit block amount through the “adjust credits” workflow on the customer page within the UI. This new capability is particularly helpful for correcting errors in credit block creation or removing a block in case of a refund for a credit grant.
